Rescue Crew Saves Dog Swept 650 Feet Out to Sea

When Bean the Australian Shepherd broke free from his leash during an afternoon beach walk in Gqeberha, South Africa, nobody expected it would turn into a life-or-death rescue mission. Within minutes, the dog plunged into the ocean at Pollock Beach and was caught in a powerful rip current that swept him more than 650 feet offshore.

Emergency responders sprang into action as soon as distress calls came through. A duty crew from the National Sea Rescue Institute happened to be nearby conducting routine training exercises, putting them in the perfect position to respond immediately.

The rescue team launched their craft as lifeguards and even a helpful bystander on a rescue board raced to help. When the NSRI rescue craft reached Bean half a kilometer from shore, rescue swimmer Mike Vermeulen jumped into the water and secured the struggling dog.

Bean was showing signs of hypothermia when they pulled him aboard. The crew wrapped him in blankets and Vermeulen used his own body heat to warm the cold, exhausted pup during the ride back to shore.

The rescue station became the site of an emotional reunion when Bean's owners arrived. A contact number on his collar helped rescuers track down his family, Jackie and Caitlin Keuler, who rushed to collect their adventurous pet.
