Rescued Beagles Get First Taste of Love in Wisconsin

In a safe house near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, dozens of beagles are experiencing soft voices, gentle hands, and freedom for the very first time in their lives.

The dogs spent years in research laboratories before being rescued and brought to Dane County. Now, hundreds of volunteers from across the country are helping them discover what it means to simply be a dog.

Kelly Landreth traveled from Colorado to coordinate care for the beagles. She watches as dogs who once knew only cages learn to trust human touch and affection.

"Your whole day and whole night is taken," Landreth said. "But I mean, I signed up for that, and I'm happy to do it."

The work is demanding but deeply meaningful. Many of the beagles are encountering everyday comforts like toys, soft beds, and kind words for the first time.

Paul Collins, Wisconsin State Director of Animal Wellness Action, explained why beagles are commonly used in research facilities. Their calm, gentle nature makes them ideal family pets but also, tragically, ideal research subjects.

"Beagles are chosen for research because they're so docile and calm," Collins said. "That's unfortunate."

The real magic is happening in small moments. A tentative tail wag. A curious sniff. A beagle leaning into a volunteer's hand for the first time.

"We've learned that a lot of them are more resilient than we would have expected," Landreth said. "They figure out very quickly that a human is for loving on, and they can love on them back."

Strangers from different states came together with one shared purpose. They're working around the clock to help these dogs heal and prepare for adoption through local and national organizations.

The volunteers say watching the transformation has been incredible. Dogs who had never felt grass under their paws or heard encouraging words are learning to play, trust, and love.

Once the beagles complete their rehabilitation, they'll be matched with forever families who can give them the lives they always deserved.
