Rescued Dog Saves Owner From NZ House Fire With a Bite

When Gary Thomas rescued Hazel from the pound, he thought he was saving her life. Last Friday in Whakatāne, New Zealand, she returned the favor with a well-placed bite that woke him from sleep as his house burned around them.

Hazel had already been surrendered by two previous owners by the time she turned 9 months old. Her second owner dumped her after deciding to make a lifestyle change, leaving the gentle pup at JDC Rescue with dwindling hopes of finding a permanent home.

Then Thomas showed up. His decision to adopt Hazel gave her a third chance at belonging to a family.

Days later, fire broke out in their home. The blaze grew faster than anyone imagined, according to neighbors who spoke with local outlet Stuff. Firefighters were called early, but for Hazel sleeping inside, it wasn't soon enough.

She bit Thomas hard enough to jolt him awake. He opened his eyes to flames consuming his house. Thanks to Hazel's alarm, he escaped with only smoke inhalation. His home turned to ash, but he walked away alive.

"His dog actually bit him and woke him up. If his dog wasn't there, he wouldn't be here," property manager Christina Eichler told reporters.

Dora Motateanu from JDC Rescue captured what makes this story shine. "I mean this is why we do this, for those moments when we see dogs finding their families," she said. The rescue had described Hazel as a "genuine treasure" in their online post just before Thomas adopted her.

Despite being abandoned twice, Hazel remained "the most gentle and loving girl you could ever meet," according to JDC Rescue. Her devotion to Thomas proved that dogs don't measure love by how long they've known you, but by the bond they feel.

The house can be rebuilt, but the life Hazel saved cannot be replaced.
