Rescued Pit Bull's Blood Saves Dying Pug in Phoenix

A rescue dog became a lifesaver for another rescue dog at Arizona Humane Society in Phoenix this May, proving that heroes come in all shapes and sizes.

Tilly, a two-year-old pug, arrived at the shelter's trauma hospital fighting for her life. She was severely anemic, underweight, dehydrated, and barely responsive.

The veterinary team knew Tilly needed an emergency blood transfusion to survive. Blood transfusions aren't common in animal shelters because of the high costs, but the team wasn't ready to give up on her.

That's when Rowlan entered the picture. The seven-year-old American pit bull terrier had also arrived at the shelter as an injured stray just weeks earlier.

Rowlan had recovered enough from his own injuries to become Tilly's perfect match. He donated the blood that would save her life.

The results were almost immediate. As soon as Rowlan's blood began flowing through her tiny body, Tilly's vital signs stabilized and she started showing signs of improvement.
