Rescuers 20 Meters From Freeing 7 Trapped in Laos Cave

Hope is surging through a remote mountain cave in Laos as rescuers edge closer to seven people trapped underground since May 20.

The seven entered a cave system in central Xaisomboun province searching for gold when heavy rain triggered a landslide that sealed them inside. Now, after days of round-the-clock work, a Thai rescue team believes they're just 20 meters from reaching the trapped group.

"From this moment on, I believe our success is not far away," said Kengkard Bongkawong, head of the rescue operation. His team broke through 15 meters of sand and gravel in a single day, a major breakthrough in the race against time.

The rescuers are working in conditions that would challenge anyone's courage. Footage shows them crawling through tight underground passages, gasping for breath, and wading through chest-high muddy water deep inside the cave system. Water pumps run day and night as the team clears obstacles blocking their path.

The rescue includes a diver who helped pull off one of the most famous rescues in recent history. In 2018, he was part of the team that freed the Wild Boars soccer team from a flooded cave in Thailand, a 17-day operation that captivated the world.

The team isn't relying on just one path to reach the trapped group. Survey crews have identified four vertical shafts above the cave that might connect to the underground system, offering backup routes if needed.
