Rescuers Save Climber Trapped on 6-Inch Ledge Overnight

When a routine climb turned into a life-threatening situation 22,000 feet up California's Sierra Nevada mountains, rescuers refused to let darkness stop them from saving a life.

Rob Martin was climbing the Mendenhall Couloir, a steep alpine gully on Laurel Mountain's east face, when he realized he'd taken a wrong turn on August 22. Below him, thousands of feet of vertical drop made climbing down impossible.

The ledge he stood on measured just six inches wide. One misstep would have been fatal.

Martin called for help around 1:20 pm, and the Mono County Sheriff Search and Rescue Team immediately understood the stakes. The route is known for its loose rock and confusing pathways, making it easy for even experienced climbers to lose their way.

"You can think you're in the right zone, but it's tricky," said Clay Tyson, owner of Ground Up Climbing Guides. The team knew they had to act fast, even as daylight faded.

Rather than wait for morning and risk Martin losing his footing in exhaustion or darkness, rescuers made a bold call. They would navigate the dangerous terrain at night, accepting the additional risks to reach Martin before a fatal fall could occur.

The team set up specialized rope systems along the mountain face. A rescue technician was carefully lowered down toward Martin's coordinates, inch by inch through the darkness.

By early morning, the rescuer reached Martin and secured him in a harness system. Working as a tandem unit, they moved together down the treacherous gully back to the main route, where the team pulled them both to safety.
