Muddy Staffordshire bull terrier being lifted from underground hole by volunteer rescue team members

Rescuers Save Dog Trapped 20 Feet Underground for 6 Hours

🦸 Hero Alert

A 12-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier named Maisy was pulled to safety after falling 20 feet down a narrow underground hole in North York Moors. Volunteer rescue teams spent six hours chiseling through rock and squeezing through tight gaps to free her.

When Maisy the dog disappeared down a narrow hole in North York Moors, her owner faced every pet parent's nightmare. But what happened next proved that hope and teamwork can move mountains, or in this case, chip through them.

The 12-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier cross had tumbled more than 20 feet underground on Friday, falling through several tight gaps before wedging between rocks. Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team rushed to the scene alongside Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association volunteers to tackle what would become a six-hour operation.

The rescue was anything but simple. Volunteers couldn't use ropes because they would restrict movement and risk dislodging rocks above the trapped dog. Instead, rescuers squeezed their bodies through cave-like passages to reach Maisy.

One brave volunteer climbed down with a hammer and chisel to widen the gap between the rocks. Another squeezed through the tight underground system to assist Maisy from below while the surface team prepared to pull her to safety.

Tony Heap, lead incident controller at SRMRT, described the conditions as "technical, challenging and very muddy." But the difficulty only strengthened the team's resolve to bring Maisy home.

Sunny's Take

The moment Maisy emerged from the ground brought tears to every rescuer's eyes. She greeted each team member individually, her tail wagging despite the ordeal. After a much-needed drink of water, she was taken to the vet for a check-up and found to be doing well.

"You could see the tears in the eyes of everybody as that dog came out of the ground," Heap said. "There was something very heartwarming about working as a team to free her. Everybody was focused on achieving the best outcome."

These volunteer organizations operate 24 hours a day, funded entirely by donations. SRMRT has served the North York Moors, Yorkshire Wolds and surrounding areas since 1965, responding to emergencies involving both people and animals.

Maisy's rescue shows the extraordinary lengths these volunteers will go to save a life, no matter how small or muddy the mission.
