Retired Couple Delivers Life-Saving Blood Across Kansas

When Bruce and Anita Luehring retired, they wanted their extra time to count for something bigger than themselves.

Now the couple spends their days crisscrossing Kansas, transporting blood donations to small towns where supplies run critically low. Bruce drives while Anita navigates from the passenger seat, playing games on her iPad between stops.

"It's always a worthwhile thing because there are always people who need blood," Bruce explains. Blood drives frequently struggle with no-shows and deferred donors, making every successful collection precious.

The Luehrings represent the heart of the American Red Cross, where volunteers make up 90% of the entire workforce. Without them, the organization's wide-reaching mission would be impossible.

Richard Roller volunteers on a different front line. As part of the Disaster Action Team in Wichita, he responds when families face their worst days after house fires, floods, or windstorms.

"We go out and provide financial assistance," Roller says. The team also connects families with nurses, counselors, and chaplains to support recovery beyond immediate needs.

Last year alone, Roller's team responded to over 600 home fires across Kansas. Each call meant another family getting help when they needed it most, from emergency funds to emotional support during trauma.

These volunteers create waves of impact that reach far beyond individual moments. When the Luehrings deliver blood to a small town hospital, that supply could save someone during emergency surgery or help a cancer patient through treatment. When Roller's team arrives at a burned home, they're not just offering financial aid but restoring hope when everything feels lost.

The American Red Cross continues searching for more volunteers to join teams like these. Whether transporting blood, responding to disasters, or supporting families in crisis, every role helps communities weather their hardest moments.
