Revolution Wind Powers 350,000 Homes Off Rhode Island Coast

The first electricity from Revolution Wind just started flowing to homes across Rhode Island and Connecticut, powering a renewable energy comeback that few predicted just months ago.

Danish energy giant Ørsted and partner Skyborn Renewables flipped the switch on March 13, 2026, connecting their massive offshore wind farm to the New England grid. Located off the Rhode Island coast, the facility will ultimately generate enough clean power for more than 350,000 homes.

The milestone feels even sweeter given the challenges the project faced. Federal wind energy initiatives faced suspension in late 2025, threatening to derail offshore developments across the country. Courts stepped in to assess those decisions fairly, allowing projects like Revolution Wind to continue building momentum.

As of March 16, the development stands at 93% completion. Workers have already installed the first massive turbine foundation in what developers call the "steel in the water" stage, marking the beginning of full offshore construction activity.

The facility will feature 65 offshore wind turbines manufactured by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy. Each turbine generates 11 megawatts, making them among the most powerful offshore wind technologies currently operating anywhere in the world.

The Ripple Effect

Revolution Wind represents more than just clean electricity for New England families. The project demonstrates how international collaboration can drive American renewable energy forward, with a Danish company bringing decades of offshore wind expertise to U.S. waters.

The development also signals broader recovery for the American offshore wind sector. After months of uncertainty, construction crews are back at work installing the complex infrastructure needed to harness ocean winds. Transporting enormous turbine components offshore and assembling them using specialized installation vessels requires precision engineering and coordination.

For the northeastern United States, Revolution Wind will become a fundamental piece of the region's clean energy future. The 704 megawatts of renewable capacity will help reduce reliance on fossil fuels while creating a template for future offshore developments along the Atlantic coast.

The combination of court decisions protecting clean energy projects and the determination of developers to push forward shows how resilience can overcome political headwinds. Other offshore wind initiatives are now following Revolution Wind's lead, progressing through their own construction milestones.
