Revolution Wind Powers New England Homes for First Time
A massive offshore wind farm began delivering clean energy to 350,000 New England homes and businesses this week, marking a major milestone for American renewable energy. Just weeks earlier, the project survived federal attempts to shut it down.
Revolution Wind started feeding electricity into New England's grid Friday, bringing affordable, reliable power to hundreds of thousands of homes across Rhode Island and Connecticut.
The 704-megawatt wind farm, featuring 68 turbines rising from the ocean off southern New England, represents a major leap forward for American clean energy. The project is a joint venture between Global Infrastructure Partners' Skyborn Renewables and Denmark-based Ørsted.
Over 2,000 American workers built Revolution Wind, with more than 1,000 union workers logging over 2 million hours on construction. The project injected nearly $700 million into domestic shipbuilding and vessel contracts, creating 14 new American-made ships.
The milestone came just weeks after federal courts blocked the Trump administration's attempt to shut down Revolution Wind and several other offshore wind projects. The courts' decision allowed construction to continue and reach completion.
Meanwhile, workers installed the final turbine blade on the nearby Vineyard Wind array Friday night, completing offshore construction on another major wind farm. That project faced challenges last July when a turbine blade fractured due to faulty manufacturing, but builder GE Vernova replaced the damaged blades and paid $10.5 million to compensate Nantucket businesses affected by the incident.

"Revolution Wind is adding affordable, reliable American-made energy to New England's grid, helping to meet growing energy demand and lower consumer costs," said Amanda Dasch, Ørsted's chief development officer.
The Ripple Effect
The timing couldn't be better for New England residents. Recent extreme cold temperatures strained the region's power grid, highlighting the urgent need for diverse, reliable energy sources.
Rhode Island Energy president Greg Cornett emphasized how the project strengthens the energy mix during periods of high demand. Joe Nolan, CEO of Eversource, noted that Revolution Wind "adds essential new supply that enhances grid reliability" precisely when customers need it most.
The project operates under 20-year agreements with utilities in Rhode Island and Connecticut, providing price stability and energy security for the region. Local communities will benefit from steady, predictable power costs while supporting American manufacturing and union jobs.
Two massive wind farms are now spinning off America's coast, proving clean energy can power modern life at scale.
