Richardson Volunteers Log 14,000 Hours Serving Community

Volunteers in Richardson, Texas are proving that kindness multiplies when you gather people together with a shared mission to help.

On April 11, Altrusa International of Richardson hosted its annual Kindness in Action Day, bringing community members together at Friends Place Adult Day Services for a marathon of good deeds. Since launching the event in 2016, the group has worked toward making Richardson "the kindest town around."

This year's volunteers tackled projects for eight different organizations in a single day. They assembled hygiene kits and prepared materials for reusable menstrual supply kits destined for economically underdeveloped areas through Days for Girls. Families served by Hope's Door received birthday bags, while active-duty military members got care packages from Blue Star Mothers of America.

The work extended to vulnerable populations across the community. Volunteers created "busy bags" filled with activities to keep children engaged at the RISD Intake Center while families complete enrollment paperwork. They made dog toys for service animals training with Patriot PAWS and assembled housewarming items for young people aging out of foster care.

New Friends New Life, which supports women escaping human trafficking, received supplies prepared by volunteers throughout the day.

Beyond this single event, Altrusa Richardson provides year-round support to city departments and local organizations. They work with Richardson Public Library, Richardson ISD, Network of Community Ministries, and the Richardson Reads One Book program.

The numbers tell a powerful story. In October 2025, Altrusa presented Richardson with documentation showing their volunteers contributed 14,040 hours of service over the previous year, valued at $488,452 to the community.

The Ripple Effect

Richardson designated April as the Month of Volunteerism back in 2012, recognizing how crucial volunteers are to city services, events, and programs. Altrusa's efforts represent just one example of countless residents who give their time throughout the month and all year long.
