Volunteers at Space2Grieve charity offering compassionate bereavement support to Richmond community members

Richmond Charity Helps 300+ Through Grief with Free Support

✨ Faith Restored

A Richmond bereavement charity that helps people navigate loss just received £4,250 to continue offering free support to grieving families. Space2Grieve's 42 volunteers helped over 300 residents last year find healing after losing loved ones. ##

When someone loses a loved one, knowing where to turn can feel overwhelming. A Richmond charity is making sure no one has to grieve alone.

Space2Grieve received £4,250 from the ICCM Metals Recycling Scheme, a national program that recovers metals from cremations to support bereavement charities. The funding helps keep all of the charity's services completely free for Richmond residents.

Since launching in 2021, Space2Grieve has built a network of 42 trained volunteers who provide compassionate listening, emotional support, and practical guidance. Adults, children, and families can self-refer and meet with volunteers at the charity's location, in schools, or over Zoom.

"To be able to offer free bereavement support, we need to raise the funds to do so," said Katherine Mathers, the charity's fundraising and communications manager. "Community giving such as this is key to help us sustain our bereavement services."

The charity also runs monthly "Compassionate Cuppas" grief cafes where bereaved residents can connect over coffee. These free drop-in sessions help reduce common barriers to getting support, including cost, stigma, and simply not knowing where to start.

Last year alone, Space2Grieve supported over 300 people dealing with significant grief. Another 152 residents attended the monthly grief cafes.

The Ripple Effect

The results speak to how much people need this support. Nearly 99% of clients reported improved wellbeing and greater confidence about their future after working with Space2Grieve volunteers.

Even more striking, 93% felt less isolated and lonely after receiving support. That matters enormously because grief can make people withdraw from the world right when they need connection most.

The partnership between Mortlake Crematorium and Space2Grieve does more than provide funding. "It strengthens a vital bereavement support network across the borough," Mathers explained.

The charity tailors its support to each person's unique situation, regardless of when or how their loved one died. Whether someone lost a family member decades ago or last week, Space2Grieve welcomes them with open arms.

Richmond residents can reach Space2Grieve at 07519 376360 or support@space2grieve.org.uk to get the free support they deserve.
