Ridge View High Honors Student 14 Years After Her Death

For 14 years, Ridge View High School in Columbia, South Carolina has turned tragedy into hope through a scholarship honoring 15-year-old Gabbiee Swainson, who was murdered in 2012.

Swainson was a sophomore cheerleader in the school's health science magnet program when her life was cut short. Her teachers and classmates refused to let her memory fade.

Now, the school hosts an annual "Cuts for Gabbiee" fundraiser that brings together the school's Master Hair Care program and local barbers. Community members get haircuts while supporting scholarships for students who embody the qualities Swainson showed during her time at Ridge View.

"It's just a way for all of us to always keep her alive on campus," said Paige Fennell, the school's student activities director.

Carlos Howard, a barber instructor at Ridge View, helps lead the event each year. He sees it as proof that communities can create something positive even after devastating loss.

The scholarship supports well-rounded students who reflect Swainson's spirit of involvement and achievement. This year, school officials set an ambitious goal of awarding four scholarships totaling $2,000.

The Ripple Effect

The impact extends beyond the money raised. Each scholarship recipient carries forward a piece of Swainson's legacy as they pursue their education and future careers.

"Her spirit lives on with those students who are selected to get those scholarships," Fennell explained. "It's like a little piece of her is also getting recognized when they go off to school and accomplish great things."

Assistant Principal Curtis Bates said the fundraiser has grown stronger each year. The combination of practical service (haircuts for the community) and meaningful purpose (honoring a student's memory) gives everyone a way to participate in something larger than themselves.

The Master Hair Care students gain real-world experience while learning that their skills can serve their community in powerful ways. Local barbers donate their time and expertise, turning an ordinary service into an act of remembrance.
