Rio's Carnival Kicks Off With 6 Million Expected to Join

The party of the year has officially begun in Rio de Janeiro, where millions will dance, celebrate, and watch tradition come alive in the world's most famous Carnival.

Mayor Eduardo Paes handed the symbolic city key to 30-year-old Danilo Vieira, this year's King Momo, on Friday. For the next five days, Vieira will reign over the festivities as the ceremonial monarch of Carnival, a tradition that represents society turning upside down in the best possible way.

"Carnival is run by me," Vieira joked before his coronation, though he assured everyone that actual city rules still apply. The Rio native takes his role seriously, tasked with presiding over parades and spreading joy throughout the metropolis.

City officials expect about 6 million revelers to flood Rio's streets for the massive celebration. Musicians, percussionists, and stilt artists will lead street parties where thousands of partygoers dressed in glitter and costumes will dance through neighborhoods.

The highlight remains Rio's famous Sambodrome, where samba schools will showcase parades they've prepared for months. Giant floats and elaborate costumes will dazzle judges who will crown a winning school after the festivities end Wednesday.

This year's parade themes celebrate Brazil's rich diversity, including tributes to sex workers, late singer Rita Lee, and Black communities in the Amazon. The variety showcases how Carnival has become a platform for representation and cultural pride.

To ensure everyone stays safe during the celebration, Rio deployed around 1,100 security agents to patrol street parties from start to finish. Special teams focused on preventing violence against women will be stationed at key locations to offer support and guidance.

In 2024, Mayor Paes made the key ceremony an official annual event, ensuring future mayors must participate in this beloved tradition. The decree protects a ritual that symbolizes hope, community, and the power of collective celebration.
