Rival Racer Pulls Driver From Burning Ferrari in Shanghai

Twenty minutes into a China GT championship race in Shanghai, British driver Ollie Millroy found himself trapped in a burning Ferrari after a violent collision. What happened next showcases the kind of courage that reminds us motorsport rivals are first and foremost human beings.

Dutch driver Loek Hartog was racing behind Millroy when the crash happened on September 5. Instead of driving past the inferno, the 23-year-old stopped his car immediately and sprinted toward the flames.

With safety marshals unable to respond quickly enough, Hartog tore off part of the burning car's door with his bare hands. He grabbed a fire extinguisher from a nearby official, doused the flames, and pulled Millroy from the opposite side of the wreckage.

Millroy was rushed to the hospital with five broken ribs, a broken collarbone, a broken hand and finger, and a bruised lung. From his hospital bed, he posted a heartfelt message on Instagram thanking his rescuer.

"I owe my life to you," Millroy wrote. "I don't remember anything between 30 seconds before the crash and 1 hour after it, but I will remember his incredible act of bravery for the rest of my life."

The British driver added that he looks forward to telling his three children about Hartog's heroism. "Loek will be the biggest superhero in history in their eyes too," he said.

Why This Inspires

Hartog's response to questions about his actions reveals something profound about human nature. "When I saw a car turning into a huge fireball far ahead, there wasn't really a decision to make," he explained on social media.

The young Dutchman admitted the rescue was terrifying and that there were moments he didn't know if he'd succeed. But he insists his actions weren't extraordinary: "I'm sure many people in my position would have reacted exactly the same way."

His humility highlights an important truth. In moments of crisis, many of us have the capacity for incredible bravery when someone's life hangs in the balance.

The race was immediately suspended after the incident, and Millroy continues recovering in the hospital. While his injuries are serious, doctors expect a full recovery.
