River Bluff Boys Golf Wins Second Straight SC Title

The River Bluff Gators boys golf team clinched their second consecutive South Carolina state championship on Tuesday, proving that excellence can become a tradition.

The Gators shot a combined 580 over two days at the Class 5A Division I championship at Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club in Conway. They entered the final round with just a four-shot lead but pulled away decisively, finishing 15 strokes ahead of runner-up James Island.

Head coach Roger Smith watched five of his golfers finish in the top 20, a remarkable display of team depth. Howie Vroon finished second overall at eight under par, just two shots behind three-time individual champion Will Ruth from Dorman.

Maddox McAamy earned all-state honors with a third-place finish at three under par. Sam Booth, Jesse Carlisle, and Cooper Raley rounded out the top-20 performances, each contributing crucial strokes to the team victory.

The Ripple Effect

This championship represents more than trophies for a trophy case. River Bluff's program is creating a culture where young athletes learn that sustained excellence comes from daily dedication, not just talent.

The team's success inspires younger golfers throughout Lexington County to pick up clubs and dream bigger. When students see their slightly older peers achieving at the highest level, it makes state championships feel possible rather than distant.

Coach Smith's program is also proving that building a championship team doesn't require recruiting superstars. Instead, it takes developing every player, creating depth, and fostering an environment where teammates push each other to improve.

The fact that five Gators finished in the top 20 shows this wasn't about one phenom carrying the team. Every player contributed, every round mattered, and every practice session throughout the year paid dividends when it counted most.
