Rivian R2 electric SUV on production line at Illinois manufacturing facility

Rivian Starts R2 Production 5 Days After Tornado Hit

🦸 Hero Alert

Electric vehicle maker Rivian launched production of its make-or-break R2 SUV just five days after a tornado tore through the Illinois factory where it's being built. No employees were injured, and the company hit its production timeline despite roof damage to the exact building housing R2 operations.

When a tornado rips through your factory days before the most important product launch in your company's history, most people would understand a delay. Rivian didn't wait.

The electric vehicle startup began producing its new R2 SUV at its Normal, Illinois plant today, right on schedule. Just five days earlier, an EF-1 tornado had collapsed part of the roof in Building 2, the exact facility dedicated to making the R2.

No employees were hurt in the April 17 storm, but the damage forced Rivian to pause operations for several days. The company had spent over two years preparing for this moment, completing a 1.1 million square foot expansion and building test vehicles since January.

CEO RJ Scaringe had written he was "beyond excited to start delivering to customers soon" before the tornado hit. His team made good on that timeline anyway.

The first R2 vehicles will go to Rivian employees, with customer deliveries starting by the end of spring. The Performance Launch Edition starts at $57,990 and packs 656 horsepower, 330 miles of range, and a 3.6 second zero to 60 time.

The Bright Side

This isn't just about one company hitting a deadline. The R2 represents Rivian's path to profitability after years of losses, with engineering improvements that cut production costs dramatically compared to their earlier vehicles.

The company designed the R2 with cost reductions built in: die casting saves 32%, a new drive unit cuts 25%, and simplified suspension slashes costs by 72%. At full production in 2027, Rivian says the R2 will cost less than half as much to build as their current trucks.

The plant is being upgraded to produce 215,000 vehicles per year, up from 150,000. Analysts estimate Rivian will build around 22,000 R2 units this year, ramping from under 400 in the current quarter to about 15,000 by year's end.

The R2 also beats its main competitor, the Tesla Model Y Performance, on range and efficiency despite being heavier and boxier. It achieves 109 MPGe combined versus the Model Y's 104 MPGe.

The most affordable $45,000 version won't arrive until late 2027, but Rivian is showing that focused execution and determined teams can overcome even nature's curveballs. Sometimes the best response to a setback is simply refusing to be set back.
