Families gathering at renovated Eureka Park recreation center for Juneteenth celebration in Roanoke Virginia

Roanoke's Juneteenth Fest Returns to Renovated Eureka Park

✨ Faith Restored

After a year away for renovations, Roanoke's Juneteenth Family Reunion is coming home to the historic Eureka Park where generations of Black families have gathered. The newly renovated park and recreation center will host Saturday's free celebration, marking both a homecoming and a testament to community resilience.

The Juneteenth Family Reunion is returning to its roots this Saturday, and the timing couldn't be more perfect.

After a year-long detour during renovations, the Roanoke Cultural Collective is bringing its annual celebration back to Eureka Park. The historic park has served as a gathering place for Roanoke's Black community since segregation, when it became one of the few spaces where African American families could freely come together.

"Eureka Park holds a special place in all of our hearts," said Jordan Bell of the Roanoke Cultural Collective. "This is where many of us grew up, went to the rec center, played basketball here."

The reunion began in 2021 when Juneteenth became a federal holiday. Organizers chose Eureka Park deliberately, honoring its role as what they call the epicenter of Black history in Roanoke's Northwest Community.

When renovations forced them to relocate in 2024, they knew it was temporary. Now the park and recreation center have been completely transformed, ready to welcome families back just in time for this year's celebration.

The Ripple Effect

The renovated Eureka Recreation Center means more than just fresh paint and new equipment. It gives Black youth in Northwest Roanoke a safe place to build community without traveling across town.

"It's a space that everyone can come and see themselves in," said Amanda Marie Spivey. "There are so many adults, probably my age too, that got their start in some way, shape or form by rec centers like this."

The facility offers classes, a gym, and gathering spaces where generations connect. For organizers, maintaining this presence in their own neighborhood matters deeply.

Robyn Mitchell described Saturday's event as both celebration and homecoming. "It's going to be like a full circle moment bringing everybody here to gather and convene again," she said.

The free event runs from noon to 5pm on Saturday, June 20th, with food and activities for all ages. Everyone is invited to be part of what organizers call a true family reunion, one that honors both the history of Juneteenth and the enduring strength of community spaces that bring people together.
