Roblox Launches Kid-Safe Accounts with Parent Controls

Millions of young gamers are getting a safer online playground as Roblox launches specialized accounts for kids and teens.

The gaming platform announced it's introducing three distinct account types based on age. Kids aged five to nine get "Roblox Kids" accounts with access only to games rated "Minimal" or "Mild." Users nine to 15 receive "Roblox Select" accounts with slightly broader access, while those 16 and up get standard accounts.

The changes roll out globally in early June, giving current users time to complete mandatory age verification checks. Anyone who skips verification will only access games designed for younger audiences.

Safety features go beyond just age gates. For the youngest users, chat stays off by default. Parents must personally approve each person their child can message, giving families total control over who talks to their kids.

Parents can also grant special permission for specific games. If a younger sibling wants to join an older one in a game outside their age range, mom or dad can approve that individual title.

Roblox built a three-step screening process to decide which games kids can play. Developers must first verify their identity and maintain an active Roblox Plus subscription. Then users 16 and older test the games first, playing through and reporting any concerns before younger players get access. Finally, automated systems scan for rule violations.

The platform designed these changes after facing pressure from state attorneys general in Louisiana and Texas over child safety concerns. Reports had surfaced about young users encountering inappropriate content and potential predators.
