Rock Legend John Mellencamp Tells Kids: Skip the 9-to-5

Rock icon John Mellencamp is turning conventional parenting wisdom upside down with a simple message to his kids: forget the career ladder and focus on what makes you happy.

The 74-year-old "Jack & Diane" singer told The Joe Rogan Experience that he actively discourages his five children from pursuing traditional jobs. "I'm the only father in the world that does not encourage their kids to work," he joked.

His philosophy centers on personal fulfillment over paychecks. Rather than pushing his children toward corporate careers or financial milestones, Mellencamp tells them to spend their time doing what brings them joy.

The rocker's approach extends beyond words. His 31-year-old son Hud still lives on Mellencamp's property, and the singer couldn't be happier about it.

"I don't want him to leave because he still lives on my property. And it's nice. I love having him there," Mellencamp shared. He admitted feeling torn when Hud mentioned wanting to find work, worried it might mean his son moving away.

"It's nice to be able to pick up the phone and have one of your kids come over quickly," he explained. For Mellencamp, having his children nearby beats any achievement on a resume.

The musician's five children range in age from 30 to 55, spanning different generations and perspectives on work. Despite his unconventional guidance, most have eventually found their own paths to careers anyway.
