While scientists have spotted thousands of planets beyond our solar system, only a handful of rocky worlds exist in what astronomers call the habitable zone. LHS 1140 b stands out as the first one confirmed to have an atmosphere protecting its surface.

The research team detected helium escaping from the planet's upper atmosphere, proving gases surround this distant world. Scientists can't yet determine what else makes up the atmosphere or whether it could support life as we know it.
Professor Robin Wordsworth, one of Cherubim's advisers, put the discovery in perspective. "Twenty years ago, we wondered whether other terrestrial-type planets even existed," he said. "Then we learned they're common and found some in the habitable zone. The next question was whether any of them had managed to keep an atmosphere. Now we know at least one has."
