Federer retired in 2022 after winning 20 Grand Slam singles titles, including a men's record eight Wimbledon championships. He spent 310 weeks ranked number one in the world, a record that stood until Novak Djokovic surpassed it.

But the 43-year-old didn't focus on those achievements during his emotional speech. Instead, he talked about what really mattered.

"They call this the Hall of Fame, but fame was never the goal," Federer told the crowd gathered to honor him. "My goal was to spend my life doing something I love, with people who love it as much as I do."

Federer started as a 13-year-old ball boy at a tournament in Basel, Switzerland. He made his professional debut at 16 in 1998 and went on to win his first Grand Slam at Wimbledon in 2003, launching a career that would inspire millions.

Beyond individual glory, Federer won Olympic doubles gold with Stan Wawrinka in 2008, singles silver in 2012, and helped Switzerland capture its first Davis Cup in 2014. He shared the court with multiple generations of players, from Andre Agassi to his greatest rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

"I need tissues and sunglasses and everything to protect me right now," Federer joked through his emotions. "This is such a mess."
