Romania Invests $755M in Solar Power for Public Buildings

Romania is betting big on sunshine, setting aside $755 million to transform how its public buildings power themselves.

The government just approved two programs that will help schools, hospitals, universities, and municipal buildings install solar panels and battery storage. The best part? Public institutions can apply for grants covering up to 100% of their costs, with a cap of $10 million per building.

The larger program allocates $500 million for brand new solar installations. These systems must include battery storage capable of running for 2 to 4 hours, ensuring buildings can use their solar power even after sunset. Institutions can also add heat pumps to the package, making their energy systems even more efficient.

Another $150 million targets public buildings that already have solar panels but lack batteries. This funding will help them store the clean energy they're already generating instead of sending excess power back to an overloaded grid.

Applications open tomorrow and run through early November, though the money might run out before then. Winning projects have until the end of 2029 to get their systems up and running.

Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, currently serving in a caretaker role, emphasized the dual benefits. "Public institutions will be able to lower their energy bills and make more efficient use of renewable energy, while simultaneously reducing strain on the grid during periods of high demand," he shared on social media.

The Ripple Effect

This investment reaches far beyond individual buildings. When hospitals and schools generate their own power, they free up grid capacity for homes and businesses during peak hours. Taxpayers benefit too, as lower energy bills for public institutions mean more money available for services.

Romania has been steadily building momentum in solar energy. The country recently crossed 8.5 gigawatts of installed solar capacity, adding a remarkable 1.8 gigawatts in just the first half of this year. Back in June, 47 public entities signed contracts for similar solar projects, proving the appetite for clean energy runs deep.

These programs draw funding from the Modernisation Fund, a European initiative helping countries transition to cleaner energy. By targeting public buildings first, Romania creates visible examples in every community of what's possible with solar power.

When the local school or hospital runs on sunshine, renewable energy stops being an abstract concept and becomes part of daily life.
