Rope Rescue Team Saves 6 from Ravine Near Rio Rancho

Six people are alive today thanks to a coordinated rescue effort after their side-by-side vehicle tumbled down a steep ravine near Rio Rancho, New Mexico early Saturday morning.

The vehicle rolled all the way to the bottom of a ravine near Southern Boulevard and 60th Street Northwest, landing in terrain so steep and remote that standard rescue methods wouldn't work. Rio Rancho Fire Rescue crews arrived to find one person had managed to climb out on their own, but five others remained trapped in an area crews couldn't reach on foot.

That's when the Rio Grande Basin Rescue Team stepped in. This specialized unit trains specifically for high-angle rope rescues in challenging terrain that most emergency crews can't safely access.

Using technical rope rescue systems, the team carefully lowered each of the five remaining occupants out of the ravine one by one. While several patients suffered serious injuries, every single person made it out alive.

Two patients needed helicopter transport to UNM Hospital due to their injuries. The remaining patients traveled by ground ambulance to nearby hospitals, with Sandoval County Fire Rescue helping Rio Rancho crews manage the scene.
