Rope Rescue Team Saves Dog Stranded 100 Feet Down Cliff

A hiking trip turned into every pet owner's nightmare when a dog bolted into the wilderness at Ecola State Park and ended up clinging to a cliff face 100 feet below solid ground.

The drama began around 3:30 PM on Saturday, June 6th, when Cannon Beach Fire District Deputy Chief Jason Smith was on routine patrol. Oregon State Park Rangers flagged him down about a missing dog whose owners had been searching desperately for two hours.

Just as Smith gathered details from the frantic owners, two hikers emerged from a nearby trail with crucial information. They'd spotted a dog stranded on a steep cliffside and wondered if anyone was looking for it.

The Cannon Beach Police Department immediately launched a drone to pinpoint the dog's exact location. What the aerial footage revealed was sobering: the terrified animal was trapped on a nearly vertical cliff face with no way up or down.

Smith activated the fire district's High Angle Rope Rescue Team, a group trained for exactly these dangerous scenarios. When they arrived and confirmed the dog's precarious position, they got to work building two rope systems anchored at the cliff's edge.

The original plan called for two rescuers to descend together. But as the first rescuer rappelled down, the already frightened dog panicked and scrambled farther across the cliff face, making a dual approach impossible.

What happened next demonstrated why these teams train relentlessly. The lone rescuer carefully traversed the exposed cliff face, moving slowly to avoid spooking the dog further. After reaching the animal, he clipped into its harness and attached the dog securely to himself for the climb back up.

The team above hauled both rescuer and dog safely to the top. Minutes later, a relieved family was reunited with their pet, who had only minor scratches despite the ordeal.
