Royals Catcher Salvador Perez Becomes Franchise HR King

Twenty years later, the Kansas City Royals catcher just made baseball history. On Saturday at Detroit's Comerica Park, Perez launched his 318th career home run, breaking George Brett's franchise record and becoming the Royals' all-time home run leader.

The timing couldn't have been more perfect. Perez's record-breaking blast tied the game in the seventh inning, sparking a comeback that led to a 3-2 Royals victory. "It's better when we win the game," Perez said with his signature grin.

The moment brought teammates from the dugout for handshakes and hugs. Even injured players back in Kansas City, including Bobby Witt Jr. and Maikel Garcia, joined the clubhouse celebration over FaceTime.

Perez's journey to this milestone started in Valencia, Venezuela, where his mother Yilda worked 12-hour days to support the family. The Royals signed him for $65,000 in 2006 when he was just 16 years old. At that age, most teenagers spend their first paychecks on themselves, but Perez handed his entire signing bonus to his mom.

He arrived in the United States the next year, never considered a top hitting prospect. His defensive skills as a catcher made him noticeable, but something clicked in 2010. Royals general manager J.J. Picollo remembers watching Perez hit balls "across the street" during spring training, realizing his power had transformed from "kid strength" to "legit."

What makes Perez's achievement special goes beyond the numbers. He's the first to arrive and last to leave every single day, from spring training's opening day through the season's final game. Teammates fight him on off days because he insists on playing every single one.

Backup catcher Luke Maile, who led the team celebration, called Perez "a legend" who inspires everyone around him. "He's someone that inspires you to want to be a big leaguer and show up for work every day," Maile said.

Perez now joins exclusive company as only the third active player to own his team's all-time home run record, alongside Mike Trout and Manny Machado. His 318 home runs rank seventh among all catchers in Major League history, trailing only names like Johnny Bench, Yogi Berra, and Carlton Fisk, nearly all of whom are in the Hall of Fame.

The record-breaking home run came at the same park where Perez hit his very first career homer back in 2011. It took him six seasons to reach 100 home runs, but then the power kept coming. By 2021, he'd matched the Royals' single-season record with 48 homers.

"I didn't think I'd make it that far in my career," Perez said after breaking the record. "A lot of sacrifice, a lot of hard work."
