Runner Jacob Kiplimo Breaks 2-Hour Marathon Barrier at 25

Mind Blown

Ugandan athlete Jacob Kiplimo just ran the third-fastest marathon in history at 2:00:28, breaking his country's record while defending his Chicago title. The 25-year-old phenom has won three world cross-country championships and set a half-marathon world record, all in the past year.

Jacob Kiplimo is rewriting what's possible in distance running, and he's doing it before his 26th birthday.

The Ugandan superstar ran 2:00:28 in London this April, smashing through the 2-hour-1-minute barrier to clock the third-fastest marathon in human history. He's now the fastest runner heading into the Chicago Marathon on October 11, where he'll defend his 2025 title.

But the marathon is just one chapter in Kiplimo's remarkable 2026. In January, he won his third straight world cross-country championship in Tallahassee, pulling away on the final lap with an 18-second victory margin not seen since 2007.

Then in March, he ran 57:20 in Lisbon to break the half-marathon world record with no pacemakers. He pushed himself over the final two kilometers after realizing the record was within reach.

Kiplimo's journey started on the slopes of Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda, where Italian coach Giuseppe Giambrone discovered him at age 14. Within months of moving to train in Tuscany, the teenager was running back-to-back three-minute kilometers on hilly routes.

Giambrone saw something special. "I spoke with people and said in the future 1:58, 1:59 in the marathon is possible," he told Athletics Weekly, even though Kiplimo was only 15.

That faith wasn't misplaced. At 15, Kiplimo became Uganda's youngest Olympic team member at the Rio Games. By 21, he'd won Olympic bronze in the 10,000 meters.

His family shares the gift. Half-brother Victor Kiplangat won the 2023 world marathon title, while brother Oscar Chelimo took bronze in the 5,000 meters at the 2022 World Championships.

Why This Inspires

Kiplimo has stood on the podium in all three marathons he's ever run. That's not luck or natural talent alone. It's the result of a teenager who left home at 15 to chase a dream most people would call impossible.

Now he's proved his coach's early prediction wasn't wild optimism but recognition of genuine potential. With his personal best just 28 seconds from the sub-two-hour marathon barrier, Kiplimo is showing the world that human limits keep moving when people refuse to accept them.

He's already the only fourth man in history to win three straight world cross-country titles, joining legends like Kenenisa Bekele. The best part? He's just getting started.
