Runt Piglet Saved From Death Thrives at Indiana Sanctuary

When a weeks-old piglet named Elwyn arrived at a classroom for show and tell, his fate seemed sealed. The runt of his litter had no economic value, and plans were made to kill him once the school day ended.

But one coworker made a different choice. That person took Elwyn and reached out to Oinking Acres Farm Rescue & Sanctuary in Brownsburg, Indiana, where founder Olivia Head agreed to take him in.

Head started the sanctuary when she was just 16 years old, transforming her family's farm into a refuge for unwanted animals. Today, the sanctuary cares for hundreds of animals including pigs, cows, sheep, goats, and more.

When Elwyn arrived at just one week old, he was fragile and underweight. He needed warmth, proper nutrition, and most of all, a sense of security he'd never known.

Runts face unique challenges from birth, often struggling to compete for milk and more vulnerable to illness. Head knew Elwyn would need close attention to his growth and development, but she also knew something else: piglets are incredibly resilient when given proper care.

Today, Elwyn's world looks completely different. He spends his days eating, sleeping, and soaking up attention from Head and her team.

The most remarkable change has been emotional. Elwyn has gone from frightened and uncertain to actively seeking affection, settling into Head's arms, and growing more confident each day.

"Every animal has a story," Head says, "and so many farm animals never get the opportunity to tell theirs." She created Oinking Acres so animals like Elwyn could finally be seen as individuals instead of commodities.

The coworker who saved Elwyn proved something powerful: one person can completely change the course of a life. Head receives calls about discarded farm animals far more often than most people realize, but she says what stood out about Elwyn's story was that someone inside the situation chose to act.

Now safe at the sanctuary, funded entirely through public support, Elwyn is doing exactly what babies do best: thriving.
