Rural School Soars from 57% to 95% Pass Rate in Two Years

Students at Hanyani Secondary School in one of South Africa's most remote regions just gained access to technology that could change their futures forever.

The University of Johannesburg and Barloworld are opening a state-of-the-art Science Centre at the rural Limpopo school this September, equipped with microscopes, 3D printers, and digital learning resources. For students in the Tshipise district between Thohoyandou and Musina, these tools were previously out of reach.

The Science Centre builds on a partnership that already transformed the school. Since 2014, UJ has worked with villages in the region to address basic infrastructure needs like energy, water, and connectivity. When they expanded to Hanyani Secondary School, they installed solar panels and created the Tshumisano Learning Centre with computers, books, and learning materials.

The results speak for themselves. The school's graduation pass rate jumped from 57% to an impressive 95% in just two years.

"At UJ, we believe that talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not," says Professor Letlhokwa George Mpedi, the university's Vice-Chancellor. The new Science Centre aims to close that opportunity gap by preparing students for careers in science, engineering, and technology.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't just about one school. The project spans several villages including Gwakwani, Matatani, and Mbodi, addressing UN Sustainable Development Goals through practical solutions that improve daily life.

Barloworld sees the investment as essential to South Africa's industrial future. "The earthmoving and heavy equipment sector is evolving rapidly," explains Andronicca Masemola, the company's Divisional Chief Executive Officer. By giving rural students hands-on experience with 3D printing and digital diagnostics, they're preparing the next generation for real-world technical careers.

The partnership demonstrates what becomes possible when universities and businesses work together to bridge the gap between classroom theory and practical application. Students who might never have seen a 3D printer now have the same tools as their urban counterparts.
