Russian Cosmonauts Complete 5-Hour Spacewalk at ISS

Working 250 miles above Earth, two Russian cosmonauts ventured outside the International Space Station for a successful five-hour spacewalk that showcased the ongoing human presence in space.

Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev spent their time installing a solar radiation experiment on the station's Russian segment and removing outdated science hardware. The duo worked methodically on the Zvezda, Poisk, and Nauka modules, completing critical maintenance that keeps the orbiting laboratory running smoothly.

Kud-Sverchkov, who commands the ISS's current Expedition 74 mission, tackled his second spacewalk with confidence. For Mikaev, this represented his first journey into the void, a career milestone for the flight engineer who wore a spacesuit with blue stripes to distinguish him from his red-striped commander.

The cosmonauts also photographed a malfunctioning antenna on a cargo spacecraft docked to the station. The Progress 94's Kurs rendezvous antenna failed to deploy properly when it arrived in March, and the detailed images will help engineers troubleshoot the issue from the ground.

This spacewalk represents the 279th excursion outside the ISS since the station began hosting rotating crews in November 2000. That's more than two decades of continuous human presence in space, with astronauts and cosmonauts from around the world working together despite tensions on Earth.
