Ryan Fox Wins First Major at 39 After Late-Bloomer Journey

A golfer who almost gave up on his dreams just won one of golf's most prestigious titles with the gutsiest shot of his life.

Ryan Fox sank an 11-foot birdie putt on the final hole Sunday at Royal Birkdale to win The Open Championship, claiming his first major title at age 39. The New Zealand golfer defeated Cameron Young by a single stroke with a closing round of 68 to finish 10 under par.

The 18th hole at Birkdale was a nightmare all week. It played as the toughest on the course, yielding only nine birdies in four rounds compared to 161 bogeys. Fox made the last of those birdies when it mattered most.

"I said to my caddie, we're going to take it on, we're going to try to win," Fox said. "I probably hit the two best shots of my life." His fearless 330-yard drive set up a perfect approach from 175 yards to just under 12 feet from the cup.

Standing over the winning putt, Fox's hands were shaking. "I'm not sure how I hit the putt straight to be honest, everything was shaking, trembling," he admitted. When the ball dropped, those same hands stretched toward the sky in triumph.

Why This Inspires

Fox's path to major champion was anything but typical. He didn't turn professional until age 25, didn't join the DP World Tour until 30, and didn't earn his PGA Tour card until 37.

Early in his career on the PGA Tour of Australasia, Fox nearly walked away from golf entirely after struggling to keep his tour card. He spent years battling wildness off the tee before finally finding consistency.

His victory makes him the first New Zealander to win The Open since Bob Charles in 1963. Only one other male golfer from New Zealand has ever won a major championship.

"I know it's going to ruin a lot of guys' Monday mornings," Fox joked, "but I think we punch above our weight a little bit in New Zealand anyway."

The son of rugby legend Grant Fox, Ryan proved that dreams don't have expiration dates. At 39, ranked 56th in the world, he showed that persistence pays off even when success comes later than expected.
