SA Power Networks Spends $10M to End Regional Blackouts

😊 Feel Good

South Australia is tackling a dusty problem that's been knocking out power across coastal regions. A $10 million upgrade will replace 10,000 insulators and install new tech to keep the lights on this summer.

Residents of South Australia's Yorke Peninsula and coastal regions won't have to worry about sudden blackouts ruining their next summer barbecue, thanks to a massive infrastructure upgrade starting this July.

SA Power Networks is investing $10 million to solve a surprising culprit behind repeated power outages: dirty insulators. When dust and salt from coastal areas settle on the equipment during dry spells, even light moisture can cause them to fail and trigger blackouts.

The problem first emerged in late 2024 but got significantly worse last summer. Now the power authority is mobilizing one of its largest workforces ever to fix it before next summer arrives.

About 50 workers will rotate through more than 25,000 hours of work over the next six months. They'll replace 10,000 insulators across 33 powerlines, swapping old components for newer silicon versions that resist pollution better.

In the highest risk coastal areas, crews will install even tougher porcelain insulators designed to withstand harsh seaside conditions. The upgrade focuses heavily on the Yorke Peninsula, with additional work planned for Eyre Peninsula and the Limestone Coast.

The Ripple Effect

The project goes beyond just swapping out equipment. SA Power Networks is installing 15 new high voltage automation switches that will transform how outages are managed.

When problems do occur, these switches will let technicians isolate issues to much smaller areas. That means fewer people affected and faster repairs when something does go wrong.

Cecilia Schutz from SA Power Networks called it the department's highest priority project. The team is racing to complete most of the work before summer returns and the dry, dusty conditions that caused the original problems come back.

For regional communities that depend on reliable power for everything from running farms to keeping medical equipment functioning, the upgrade represents genuine peace of mind. The investment shows that when infrastructure problems get identified, they can be fixed with the right resources and urgency.

Thousands of South Australian families will sleep easier knowing someone's working hard to keep their power running strong.
