Salem Leads Oregon with 30 Pole-Mounted EV Chargers

If you live in an apartment or rent a home without a garage, charging an electric vehicle has always been a headache. Salem, Oregon just made that problem a whole lot easier to solve.

Portland General Electric has installed 30 public EV chargers on power poles throughout Salem's side streets. The gray boxes with orange cables represent the largest concentration of these neighborhood chargers anywhere in Oregon, with eight more coming soon.

The genius is in the simplicity. Drivers park on the street, scan a QR code with their phone, and the cable automatically drops down from the pole. After plugging in, the system does the rest. When charging finishes, the cable retracts on its own.

These aren't lightning-fast chargers, taking between four and ten hours for a full charge. But for overnight parking or workday charging, they're perfect for the people who need them most.

The program specifically targets residents who've been left out of the EV revolution. Renters, apartment residents, and anyone without a driveway now have the same charging access as homeowners with garages.

Charging costs just 12 cents per kilowatt hour, jumping to 28 cents during peak evening hours between 5 and 9 p.m. The pricing encourages off-peak charging, which is better for the electric grid anyway.

Salem Electric is taking a different approach, installing free level-two chargers in apartment complexes throughout West Salem and Keizer. Property managers keep the spots accessible while the utility handles billing.

The Ripple Effect

This infrastructure shift does more than help current EV owners. It removes one of the biggest barriers preventing renters from going electric in the first place.

Nearly half of Salem residents rent their homes. Without accessible charging, EVs simply weren't an option for them, no matter how much gas prices climbed or how concerned they were about air quality.

Now those same residents can make transportation choices based on what works for their budget and values, not what their landlord's parking lot allows. Other Oregon cities are taking notice, with chargers planned for Silverton, Willamina, and expansions in Woodburn.

The program proves that creative thinking about existing infrastructure can solve new problems without massive construction projects or torn-up streets.

Salem's leadership in accessible EV charging shows what happens when utilities listen to the needs of all residents, not just homeowners.
