Sam Kerr Returns to NWSL, Leads Gotham FC to Title Chase

When Sam Kerr stepped onto the field at Citi Field in July, 42,175 fans erupted in cheers for the returning soccer star who'd dominated their league for years but never quite captured its biggest prize.

The Australian striker spent seven seasons in the National Women's Soccer League, winning three Golden Boots and two MVP awards. But an NWSL championship always eluded her, including a painful 4-0 loss in the 2019 final with the Chicago Red Stars.

After six successful years at Chelsea in England where she won eight trophies, Kerr made a surprising choice in June. She signed a four-year deal with Gotham FC, returning to the league where her trophy case felt incomplete.

"That's why I'm back, is to change that narrative," Kerr told USA TODAY Sports. "At Chelsea everyone talks about all the trophies I won rather than the individual accolades. That's what I'm trying to change here."

The timing couldn't be better for women's soccer. The NWSL has grown dramatically since Kerr left in 2019, with record attendance and global stars filling rosters across the league.

Yael Averbuch West, Gotham's president of soccer operations, spent months preparing before even talking to Kerr about joining. When they finally spoke, the pitch wasn't about money or fame.

"They want to know, 'What is my life going to be like tomorrow when I move there?'" Averbuch West explained. Gotham checked every box: proximity to family in Massachusetts, a championship-winning culture, and familiar faces including three former Chelsea teammates.

Kerr's life looks different now too. She and her wife, former Gotham midfielder Kristie Mewis, married in December 2025 and have a 15-month-old son named Jagger.

But her competitive fire burns hotter than ever. "My expectations of myself and others around me is much higher," Kerr said. "The motivation for me has always been to win trophies."

The Ripple Effect

Kerr's return energized a league facing challenges keeping its biggest stars from leaving for Europe. Her choice to come back sends a powerful message: the NWSL can be where the world's best players want to be.

With seven weeks left in the regular season, Gotham FC sits atop the NWSL standings. The team that already won championships in 2023 and 2025 is chasing another title, this time with their returning star finally positioned to complete her collection.

The roar from those 42,175 fans wasn't just about welcoming back a beloved player—it was celebrating a choice that believes in women's soccer's American future.
