Samsung Workers Approve $370K Bonuses, Avert Strike

Nearly 78,000 Samsung workers in South Korea just voted to accept bonuses that most people only dream about, ending months of tense negotiations and preventing a strike that could have rippled across the global tech industry.

The deal gives each eligible employee roughly $370,000 this year, a massive payout driven by Samsung's record-breaking performance in the AI chip boom. In April alone, the company's operating profit jumped 750% compared to last year, and its market value crossed $1 trillion for the first time ever.

About 74% of union members voted yes on the government-mediated agreement, which covers more than 60% of Samsung's total workforce. The generous bonuses reflect how crucial these workers have become as tech companies worldwide scramble to secure chips for AI data centers.

The deal also introduces a new 10-year performance bonus system specifically for semiconductor workers and includes an average 6.2% wage raise. Workers pushed hard for better compensation after seeing their counterparts at rival SK Hynix receive bonuses more than three times larger than Samsung's payouts last year.

Not everyone is celebrating, though. Workers in Samsung's consumer electronics divisions say the agreement unfairly favors semiconductor employees. A smaller union representing those workers has filed a court injunction to block the deal, revealing tensions within the company about how wealth from the AI boom gets distributed.

The Ripple Effect

This agreement does more than just make thousands of workers significantly wealthier. By averting a strike, Samsung ensures that global supply chains for AI technology keep humming along smoothly at a critical moment when every major tech company is racing to build more powerful data centers.

The timing matters beyond just one company's labor relations. Samsung is already breaking ground on a $1.5 billion semiconductor testing plant in Vietnam, about 37 miles north of Hanoi, with operations expected to start in November 2027. That facility will focus on legacy memory chips, which remain scarce as manufacturers shift capacity toward cutting-edge AI semiconductors.

The investment shows how the AI revolution is creating good jobs and economic opportunities across multiple countries, not just in Silicon Valley. Vietnam's new plant represents Samsung's first semiconductor testing facility in the country, bringing advanced manufacturing jobs to the region.
