San Diego Firefighters Compete in Spain Rope Rescue Games

Six firefighters from San Diego are taking their rescue skills global, competing against elite teams from around the world in Spain's international rope rescue competition.

The San Diego Fire Department's Technical Rescue Team will face off against 28 teams from across the globe on April 30 and May 1. They're one of only four North American teams selected for "Rescue Great Day," a competition testing technical skills in challenging high-angle scenarios.

The team includes five men and one woman who specialize in rope rescue operations. Firefighter and paramedic Donald Chen says the competition focuses on speed and patient care, two critical elements in real-world emergencies.

Nobody knows what they'll face until the competition starts. Teams must prepare for any terrain or situation, from stadium rescues to industrial areas, using 300 feet of rope and all their own equipment.

The competition simulates real rescue operations where every second counts. Teams hoist themselves over ledges, secure patients on stretchers, and lower them to safety, all while being judged on technique and speed.

What makes this story even more inspiring is the personal investment these firefighters are making. They're bringing their own gear and paying their own travel expenses, with help from a few sponsors, all to become better at their jobs.

Chen says the competition isn't just about winning. It's an educational opportunity where teams learn from each other's techniques and approaches to complex rescue scenarios.
