San Marcos Celebrates 32 Years of Juneteenth Freedom Events

For three decades, a Texas nonprofit has turned one historic day into an entire month of celebration, education, and unity.

The Juneteenth Foundation in San Marcos is marking its 32nd year of honoring June 19, 1865, when Union troops finally delivered freedom orders to enslaved Black residents in Texas. This year, they're going bigger than ever with events spanning the entire month of June.

The celebration kicks off June 5 with their annual fish fry drive-through at the Dunbar Center, serving up catfish, hush puppies, and all the trimmings. On June 9, both county and city officials will issue proclamations recognizing the holiday's importance.

The heart of the festivities happens June 19 with a Unity Walk starting at 8 a.m., bringing neighbors together for a meaningful march to the Dunbar Community Center. The next day, Plaza Park transforms into a celebration hub with BBQ, live music, kids' activities, and a cookoff running into the evening.

Chairman David Peterson shared what makes these events special: honoring the pioneers who've supported Juneteenth celebrations for decades. "We don't have a lot of them left," Peterson said, emphasizing why this year's tributes to Georgia Cheatham, Joe Wheeler, Charles Bolden, and other community leaders matter so much.

The month wraps up June 27 with a Unity Gala Fundraiser featuring speaker Dr. Dwight David Watson. The evening will blend inspiration with action, raising funds for the foundation's year-round work helping community members with food, medical assistance, educational scholarships, and other crucial needs.
