Santa Barbara Awards $21K to 10 Young Musicians

The Performing Arts Scholarship Foundation in Santa Barbara just handed out $21,000 in scholarships to 10 young musicians who proved they have what it takes to make it big. After rigorous auditions that whittled down more than 30 applicants, these finalists performed at a final concert that left judges genuinely impressed.

The competition recognized talent across three categories: Junior Instrumental, Junior Vocal, and Senior Instrumental. Pianist Chloe Emma Silva took first place in Junior Instrumental after performing internationally in venues as far as Japan. Soprano Nikki Seppala Kurnik won the Junior Vocal division, bringing experience from training at Kristin Chenoweth's Broadway Bootcamp.

In the Senior Instrumental category, violist Lydia Plaut claimed top honors with her conservatory training and festival experience. What makes her win especially meaningful is that she represents the kind of professional musician these scholarships aim to create.

A panel of world-class judges evaluated each performance, including musicians who've graced stages at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and international venues from Tokyo to Amsterdam. They looked beyond technical skill to find something deeper: musical voice and genuine expression.

The Ripple Effect

The real magic of this competition shows up in the connections between past and present. Several of this year's finalists previously won awards in earlier years and returned to show their growth. Pianists Noelle Hadsall and Annabelle Zhang both earned first place in Junior Instrumental in previous years before advancing to compete at the senior level.

Even more inspiring, some students now study with teachers who once stood on that same competition stage. Former scholarship recipients have gone on to win Grammy Awards and build professional performing careers, while others returned home to teach the next generation.

"We're now watching the vision of PASF come to life in ways we could only hope for years ago," said Deborah Bertling, the foundation's Board President. She noted that the artistry continues to deepen each year, with students arriving not just with technical chops but with real musical maturity.

The scholarship money gives these young artists options: private lessons, summer conservatory programs, college tuition, or even purchasing better instruments. For musicians trying to break into a competitive field, that financial support can make the difference between giving up and pushing forward.

This competition proves that investing in young talent creates something bigger than individual success stories.
