Santa Barbara Awards $220K in Childcare Scholarships

Working families in Santa Barbara County are getting real relief from childcare costs that have forced many parents to choose between their careers and caring for their kids.

United Way of Santa Barbara County just released the second round of funding for its Brighter Futures Childcare Scholarship Program. Since launching, the program has awarded over $220,000 to support nearly 40 local children and their families.

The program targets a critical gap. These families earn too much to qualify for public assistance programs but not enough to comfortably afford quality childcare in one of California's most expensive counties.

The numbers tell a stark story. Experts recommend families spend about 7% of their household budget on childcare. In Santa Barbara County, families are spending up to 30% on childcare alone, rivaling what they pay for rent or groceries.

Christian Patterson, Manager of Early Care & Education at the Santa Barbara County Education Office, sees the program's broader impact. "United Way's Brighter Futures Scholarship Awards are helping relieve that burden by expanding access to quality childcare, supporting a stronger workforce, and creating brighter futures for children and families."

The struggling childcare sector costs Santa Barbara County between $200 and $300 million annually. High costs and limited availability force working parents to leave or reduce their workforce participation while employers struggle with recruitment and retention.

The Ripple Effect

The scholarship program emerged from a $2 million American Rescue Plan Act award that United Way and the Santa Barbara Foundation received in 2023. That initial funding launched systems level solutions including new facilities, business development support for childcare providers, and emergency childcare for first responders.

"Childcare is essential community infrastructure," said Rose Levy, Director of Strategic Partnerships & Advancement at United Way. "The cost of a struggling sector impacts not only working parents, but those running childcare businesses, employers recruiting and retaining the workforce, and the children themselves."
