Santa Barbara Gets 20 Fast Chargers and Giant Battery

Electric vehicle drivers in Santa Barbara just got a game-changing upgrade that makes charging faster, easier, and greener than ever before.

Electrify America opened its largest charging hub yet in downtown Santa Barbara, featuring 20 ultra-fast chargers that can add up to 20 miles of range per minute to compatible EVs. The station sits on a former Greyhound bus depot at 36 West Carrillo Street, putting high-speed charging right in the heart of the city.

What makes this station special goes beyond the number of chargers. It's paired with a 1.9-megawatt battery energy storage system, the biggest public battery Electrify America has deployed so far.

The battery works like a smart power reserve. It stores electricity when demand is low or when solar panels are generating extra power, then releases that energy during busy charging periods when lots of drivers need a quick boost.

This clever setup solves two problems at once. It reduces strain on the local power grid during peak hours and helps maximize the use of renewable energy that might otherwise go to waste.

"By incorporating advanced storage technology, we're able to bring Hyper-Fast charging to locations that have traditionally been difficult to serve," said Rob Barrosa, Electrify America's president and CEO. The technology makes it possible to build large charging stations in urban areas where power grid capacity might be limited.

Despite being a popular destination for LA drivers heading to the beach, Santa Barbara has been surprisingly underserved when it comes to EV charging infrastructure. This new station helps fill that gap at a crucial time as more Californians switch to electric vehicles.

Later this summer, some chargers will be swapped to NACS connectors as part of an ongoing pilot program. That means even more EV drivers will be able to plug in directly without needing adapters.

The Ripple Effect

This is the fourth large-format station Electrify America has built in California, joining locations in Santa Monica, San Diego, and San Francisco. These mega-hubs with 20 or more chargers represent a smart strategy for keeping up with growing EV adoption.

Larger charging stations mean shorter wait times, less range anxiety, and more confidence for drivers considering the switch to electric. When you know you can pull into a station with 20 available chargers instead of just two or three, the whole experience becomes less stressful.

The battery storage system also sets a precedent for future charging infrastructure. By showing how batteries can make fast charging work in grid-constrained areas, this station opens doors for more urban charging locations that might have seemed impossible before.

As California continues leading the nation in electric vehicle adoption, innovations like this prove that infrastructure can keep pace with demand while staying committed to clean energy goals.
