Santa Barbara Gives Away Free Trees to Fight Climate Change

Imagine getting a beautiful native tree delivered to your door for free, just for wanting to help the planet.

Santa Barbara Clean Energy is making that dream real with the return of its Community Tree Program. Starting this week, residential customers can reserve a free 5-gallon tree to plant on their property, turning individual yards into a network of carbon-capturing green spaces across the city.

The program offers six native California species perfectly suited to the region's dry climate. Participants can choose from island ironwood, elderberry, coast live oak, toyon, box elder, and California bay laurel. Each tree was selected not just for its beauty, but for its ability to thrive without excessive water.

These aren't just pretty additions to the neighborhood. Each tree will provide cooling shade during hot summers, prevent soil erosion during winter rains, create habitat for local wildlife, and pull carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere. It's climate action that grows stronger every year.

The initiative directly supports Santa Barbara's Climate Action Plan, which identifies urban tree planting as one of the most effective strategies for reducing greenhouse gases. Instead of waiting for big policy changes, residents can take meaningful action right in their own front yards.

"Trees are one of nature's most effective tools for capturing carbon from the atmosphere," said Jon Griesser, SBCE Programs Manager. "We are delighted to continue offering this program to our customers."

The program runs on a first-come, first-served basis with limited quantities available. Once approved, participants receive notification about when and where to pick up their tree. Santa Barbara Clean Energy, a not-for-profit city program, supplies clean electricity to homes and businesses throughout Santa Barbara.
