Santa Barbara Students Seek $7.7M in College Scholarships

More young people in Santa Barbara County are dreaming big and reaching for higher education.

The Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara received 3,481 applications for college funding this academic year. That's 182 more students than last year, representing a 5% increase in local youth seeking financial support for their educational goals.

The surge suggests something hopeful is happening in Santa Barbara County. More students are envisioning futures that include college, graduate school, or vocational training, even as costs continue to rise.

Last year, the foundation distributed more than $7.7 million across 2,125 students throughout the county. The organization reviews every application personally, and this year's recipients will learn their fate between April and May.

"This year's application total suggests a surging hunger for postsecondary education among young people in our community," said Foundation President and CEO Melinda Cabrera. She sees the numbers as proof that local students are determined to pursue their dreams despite financial obstacles.

The foundation doesn't just write checks and disappear. They also offer free financial aid advising services to help families navigate the complex world of college funding.
