Saudi Arabia's Renewable Energy Jumps 88% in 2025

Saudi Arabia just proved that even oil giants can lead the clean energy revolution.

The Kingdom's operational renewable energy capacity jumped 88 percent in 2025, hitting 12.313 gigawatts by year's end. Investment in these projects topped $9.6 billion, marking a dramatic shift from launching initiatives to running large-scale operations.

Fifteen renewable energy projects are now powering Saudi homes and businesses, according to the General Authority for Statistics. The surge comes as the Kingdom races toward an ambitious goal: generating 50 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

"This is an unprecedented qualitative transformation in the Kingdom's modern economic history," said Majid Refae, chairman of the Saudi Polytechnic Institute for Renewable Energy. He explained that the momentum stems from faster project implementation, expanded investment in clean technologies, and world-leading cost competitiveness.

The transformation extends beyond solar and wind farms. Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as a major player in green hydrogen production, building the infrastructure and workforce needed to compete globally.

The Ripple Effect

This energy revolution is creating waves across Saudi society. New industries are emerging around renewable technology, creating thousands of jobs for Saudi workers being trained in specialized programs.

The Saudi Polytechnic Institute for Renewable Energy is preparing citizens to operate and maintain these projects according to international standards. Training programs now cover solar power, wind energy, green hydrogen, and energy storage technologies, linking education directly to market needs.

Local manufacturing is expanding too. Building a domestic supply chain for renewable energy components reduces import dependence while adding value to the national economy. The private sector and international companies are joining government efforts, bringing expertise and accelerating development.

The Kingdom's renewable energy sector now holds an advanced position globally in production costs, project scale, and infrastructure readiness. Between 2026 and 2030, experts expect another growth surge as major solar and wind projects come online alongside green hydrogen facilities designed for both domestic use and export.

For a nation built on oil wealth, this clean energy transformation represents more than environmental progress. It's economic diversification in action, creating a sustainable foundation for future generations while strengthening the Kingdom's regional and international standing.
