Saudi Rose Farms Bloom 15% as Taif Growers Thrive

In the highlands of Taif, Saudi Arabia, over 1,300 small farm families are proving that sustainable agriculture can smell sweet and pay well.

The region's rose sector is experiencing remarkable growth, with production climbing more than 15% each year. Across 700 hectares of farmland, these growers now harvest around 500 million roses annually, feeding 36 perfume factories worth $14 million.

The Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program, known as Saudi Reef, has been the quiet force behind this blooming success. The government initiative provides technical training, project financing, and marketing support to help small-scale farmers compete in global markets.

One of their smartest moves was establishing the Rose Producers Association in Taif, giving scattered farmers a unified voice and shared resources. They've also partnered with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization to bring international expertise to local fields.

Taif's natural advantages make this growth possible. The region's ideal climate supports more than 20 types of aromatic plants that need little water and cost less to cultivate than traditional crops.

The timing couldn't be better. Global demand for roses is surging 10 to 15% annually as perfume makers, pharmaceutical companies, and beverage producers discover new uses for the fragrant flowers.
