Save the Children Plans Long-Term Nepal Rebuild

When disaster strikes, the cameras arrive quickly and leave even faster. But Save the Children is making a different commitment to Nepal's flood survivors: they're staying for the long haul.

The aid organization is currently distributing food, water, diapers and toothbrushes to families in Nuwakot district, one of the hardest-hit areas. But their staff are already meeting with local authorities about what comes next: rebuilding homes, restoring livelihoods, and getting children back to learning.

"Once the story's over, everybody's going to fly out," said Lefevre, a Save the Children representative. "The people who are left here are the communities whose homes have been washed away."

Flash flooding tore through the district, leaving families with nothing but what they could salvage. Temporary shelters now house survivors who are still processing what they've lost.

The organization knows that emergency supplies are just the beginning. Families will soon need jobs and income to support themselves. Children who witnessed the destruction will need time and support to heal from the trauma.

The Ripple Effect

Save the Children has already set up child-friendly spaces in their temporary shelters, staffed with psychosocial counselors. These safe zones give kids a place to play, process their emotions, and start feeling normal again while their parents figure out next steps.

Getting children back into classrooms is a top priority. Education provides structure, routine, and hope when everything else feels uncertain. It also allows parents to focus on rebuilding their lives and finding work.

The strategy reflects a growing understanding in disaster relief: real recovery takes years, not weeks. Communities need partners who will stick around long after the news crews pack up and the donations slow down.
