Science Says 84 Minutes Is the Perfect Friend Hangout

😊 Feel Good

New research pinpoints the sweet spot for quality time with friends, and it's shorter than you think. Even better news: five minutes still counts.

Forget marathon coffee dates or all-day adventures. Science just gave us permission to keep our friend time perfectly short and sweet.

A 2026 study commissioned by Madrí Excepcional surveyed British customers and discovered the ideal hangout length is exactly 84 minutes. That's just enough time to cover what really matters: family updates, friendship gossip, work news, relationships, and travel plans.

The findings build on earlier research from 2023, when professors studying 900 college students discovered something remarkable. Reaching out to just one friend or family member each day, through any of seven simple behaviors like catching up, joking around, or offering compliments, noticeably improved daily well-being.

Jeffrey Hall, lead author and professor of communication studies at the University of Kansas, found the results striking. "Engaging in as little as one communication behavior with one friend in a day can improve daily well-being," he observed.

The timing couldn't be more relevant. Licensed professional counselor Christina Thomas told Texas Health that post-pandemic life has created a new kind of mental isolation, even when we're constantly busy.

Why This Inspires

Here's the truly hopeful part: 62% of people surveyed prefer shorter, more frequent hangouts over big social events. Nearly seven in ten said they're open to more spontaneous friend time, even though life has gotten more scheduled.

And you don't need 84 minutes every day. Thomas emphasized that even five minutes checking in on a friend makes a real difference.

"We don't have to check in with our friends every single day, and we don't need to spend hours on end on the phone either," Thomas explained. "You can put aside about five minutes a day to quickly respond back to messages, whether that be at the start of your day, at the end, or somewhere in the middle."

The message is clear: friendship doesn't require elaborate plans or endless time. It just requires showing up, even briefly.
