Scientists Discover Horses Whistle and Sing at Once

For thousands of years, humans have lived alongside horses without understanding the secret behind their distinctive call. Scientists at the University of Copenhagen just cracked the code, and it turns out horses have a vocal ability almost no other animal possesses.

Horses produce their signature whinny using two completely different sound systems at the same time. They vibrate their vocal folds like humans do when singing to create a low, rumbling tone. Simultaneously, they whistle through their larynx to generate a high-pitched sound layered on top.

This rare phenomenon is called biphonation, and it means every whinny carries two independent messages at once. The low frequency conveys one emotion while the high frequency communicates something entirely different.

Researcher Elodie Briefer explains that horses have puzzled scientists for years because they don't follow normal mammal sound patterns. Large animals typically produce only deep sounds because their bigger larynxes create lower tones. Horses break this rule with their surprisingly high-pitched whinnies despite their size.

To solve the mystery, scientists used a creative experiment involving helium. They passed air through larynxes from deceased horses, then switched to helium and back again. Because sound travels faster in helium, whistles change pitch while vocal fold vibrations stay the same.

The results were immediate and dramatic. When helium flowed through, the high frequency jumped higher while the low frequency remained unchanged. William Tecumseh Fitch from the University of Vienna says the team was thrilled when they saw the frequency shift happen exactly as predicted.

Horses are now the first large mammal discovered using this internal laryngeal whistling technique. Small rodents like rats and mice can whistle this way, but horses are the only animals known to combine whistling with vocal fold vibration simultaneously.

This discovery reveals something beautiful about the animals we thought we knew so well. Horses evolved a sophisticated communication system that lets them express complex, layered emotions in a single call. Their close relatives, Przewalski's horses, share this ability, but more distant cousins like donkeys and zebras don't have the high-frequency element.

After 4,000 years together, horses still have secrets to share with us, and we're finally learning to truly listen.
