Scientists Identify 51 Solutions to Repair the Planet

One solution involves bringing back large animals to landscapes. This simple change increases biodiversity, helps absorb more carbon dioxide, and even boosts tourism in those areas. Other proven fixes include expanding clean air zones in cities, letting Indigenous communities manage land, and creating more marine protected areas that help both nature and coastal communities thrive.

The scientists are building on an emerging field that flips disaster thinking on its head. Instead of studying how ecosystems collapse, they're mapping how positive changes can cascade into massive improvements. Solar power adoption and global mangrove restoration efforts already show this pattern in action.

Meanwhile in China, another environmental shift is gaining speed. New research from the think tank Ember reveals that coal generation has stalled in 17 out of 26 Chinese provinces. Fossil fuel use has peaked in eight out of 11 industrial sectors, and electric vehicles now make up 26% of new truck sales.

Dr. Muyi Yang from Ember says the clean energy system is "gaining both strength and scope" while fossil fuel use flattens out province by province. China still depends heavily on coal and oil, but the handover to renewables is well underway with implications that will reach far beyond its borders.

These aren't distant dreams or theoretical models. Communities around the world are already living these solutions. When big animals return to landscapes, local economies benefit from nature tourism. The research arrives as a UN report warns we're on track to breach 1.5 degrees of warming. But instead of just sounding alarms, scientists are pointing to exits that are already open and working.
