Scientists Solve Mystery of Golden Orb Found in Deep Sea

When scientists piloted their remote submersible across the Gulf of Alaska's ocean floor in August 2023, they spotted something that looked like it belonged in a sci-fi movie. A perfect golden orb, about four inches wide and dome-shaped, sat perched on a rock more than two miles below the surface.

The crew aboard NOAA's research ship Okeanos Explorer couldn't identify what they were seeing. One researcher joked it looked like a "yellow hat," while others speculated it might be an unknown egg casing or evidence of an entirely new form of ocean life.

The team carefully collected the mysterious sphere and sent it to the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. Scientists noticed a small tear near its base and began their investigation into what this strange object could be.

The answer required collaboration between genetics experts, deep-sea specialists, and bioinformatics researchers. They examined the orb's physical structure under microscopes and extracted its DNA for whole-genome sequencing.

The breakthrough came when scientists found the object was made of fibrous material packed with special stinging cells called spirocysts. These cells only exist in cnidarians, a group of aquatic invertebrates that includes jellyfish, corals, and anemones.

DNA testing revealed the golden orb matched genetic material from deep-sea anemones. When researchers compared it to another similar specimen collected in 2021, both turned out to be nearly identical to a species called Relicanthus daphneae.

This particular anemone species lives near thermal vents on the ocean floor and wasn't even formally classified until 2006, despite being discovered decades earlier. When fully extended, these creatures display pinkish or pale purple tentacles that can stretch up to seven feet long.

Why This Inspires

The golden orb mystery shows how much we still have to discover in Earth's own backyard. Scientists estimate we've explored less than 20 percent of the ocean floor, meaning countless wonders remain hidden in the deep.

Allen Collins, director of NOAA Fisheries' National Systematics Laboratory, calls it "a complex mystery that required morphological, genetic, deep-sea and bioinformatics expertise to solve." The collaboration between different scientific disciplines made the breakthrough possible.

Advanced DNA sequencing technology now allows researchers to identify species and solve biological puzzles that would have remained mysteries just a generation ago. Each discovery helps scientists better understand ocean ecosystems and the remarkable life forms that thrive in Earth's most extreme environments.
