Scottish Fans Donate $15K After Riding Yellow School Buses

When Mike Teevan needed to transport 560 Scottish soccer fans to World Cup matches in Massachusetts, he never imagined yellow school buses would spark such joy.

The Scotland resident had originally planned to charter private coaches for his country's matches against Haiti and Morocco in June. But when one transportation provider withdrew, leaving him facing $14,000 in extra costs, he switched to school buses operated by First Student.

Some passengers worried about the lack of air conditioning and restrooms for the trip from Boston to Gillette Stadium. Instead, they discovered something magical.

With windows down, hundreds of fans sang throughout the 75-minute journey. They stopped to buy 8,000 cans of beer across both game days and embraced every moment of the ride.

"The American school bus is something that everybody knows here, mainly due to 'The Simpsons,'" Teevan told local reporters. "But the school buses were just another level."

The fans had each paid about $60 for transportation. After the last-minute switch, not a single person requested a refund.

The Ripple Effect

The school bus experience touched Teevan so deeply that he wanted to give back to the students whose buses they had borrowed. He donated the $15,000 saved from the transportation switch to The Massachusetts Child, a charity run by the Massachusetts Teachers Association.

The organization provides grants to school districts for books, supplies, clothing, and other essentials for students experiencing financial hardship. Last year alone, they distributed more than $60,000 to 50 school districts across the state.

This wasn't the only generous gesture from Scotland's "Tartan Army" during the tournament. A separate group of Scottish fans staying in Providence donated $10,000 to Hasbro Children's Hospital.

What started as a cost-saving solution became a beautiful reminder that the best moments often arrive unexpectedly, and generosity has a way of turning strangers into friends across an ocean.
